Landscape features for nature and farmers: An analysis of the legal framework for agroforestry in Germany and a discussion of potential adjustments

Agroforestry, that is the deliberate integration of woody perennials into agricultural fields, is seen as a possibility to combine environmental protection and agricultural production. However, while traditional agroforestry systems such as orchard meadows and hedgerows were an integral component of the agricultural landscape in the past, they are only seldomly found today. Next to other factors, legal barriers are a major constraint for agroforestry.

Against this background, it is the aim of this PhD project to analyse current legal opportunities and obstacles for agroforestry systems at the European, German federal and state level and to develop proposals for adjusting the legal framework. To this end, the different perspectives of actors from administration, science and civil society will be analysed, and the potentials and risks that emerge from agroforestry systems for agricultural and environmental targets will be taken into account.
